Options for Foreign Language Credit

Why only have 1 option for foreign language requirements? Leander ISD and the PTA of Vista Ridge High School want to offer students options. Come to the next meeting to find out more!

Option #1 is for your student to take foreign language for a minimum of 2 years in a classroom setting. They can choose from Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, and Sign Language.

Option #2 is for your student to travel to a variety of countries and receive language instruction in this country. They will be fully immersed and receive 1 year full credit in 2 weeks.

Option #3 is for a cultural class where your student learns more about a culture than just the language they speak. Your student will have a more immersive cultural experience in this option. 2 years are required.

Immersion Language Learning Offered This Year!

Would your student like to learn a foreign language by immersing themselves into that culture and language? Find out at the next PTA meeting how your student can do this and the cost. Leander ISD is helping to pay for this program. Students will learn so much language in 2 weeks that it counts as a full year of foreign language credit.

Would you like options for the district’s foreign language requirement? Join us at our meeting September 15, 2021 to learn more!

Why would we just offer foreign language learning in a classroom setting? We can and should have more options.

Gone are the days of sitting idly by in a classroom setting trying to conjugate foreign language verbs and grammatically learn a language. We want options for our students!

How was your experience in learning a foreign language in a classroom setting? If you don’t hear this language as an adult, then do you still speak it? Did you maintain any grammar learning in your foreign language?

If you didn’t have an overwhelmingly positive experience in learning a foreign language, then why would your teenager? Would you like students to have options for foreign language requirements?

The PTA has partnered with Leander ISD, and we are excited to announce this school year we have options! Three options to fit families’ needs and budget.

We will be offering 50 scholarships for those students that would like option # 2 but cannot afford the cost. These students will demonstrate need and write an essay explaining why they would like to travel to another country to learn the language.

If your student wants to learn foreign language in a classroom setting, then this is still option #1. They can still take foreign language in a classroom setting, and this year their instruction will be research based. They will not be required to speak this language for 1 full year in the classroom.

If your student would like to learn more than the language of another culture, than option #3 could be the right fit. This option is still required for 2 years and will be taught and translated in the culture’s language. This option allows a student to learn more in depth about another culture. Music, art, food, technology, science, dress, history, activities and language will be the focus.

Options are what Leander ISD and the PTA are bringing to the district. Choose what is right for your family.
